Brookdale Center
Brookdale Center opened in 1962, with three department stores. They were:
* JCPenney's
* Sears
* Woolworth's
History
Brookdale Center was a nice mall in its time, until Brooklyn Center was getting rundown. Theft was suspected and happened occasionally at Brookdale Center. Stores were rundown, and later in the process. There was a 50% vacanacy at Brookdale Center. With less stores closed than opened. The first store to close was Woolworth's, in 1965. The Woolworth's was the first original department store to close. Woolworth's closed to make way for a Dayton's and a Donaldson's.
Brookdale Center's department stores in 1967. They were:
* Dayton's
* Donaldson's
* JCPenney's
* Sears
Brookdale Center was getting more popular as two new department stores opened. Dayton's opened in 1966 and Donaldson's opened in 1967. The Brookdale Center's JCPenney's was changed from a dry good store to a retail store with clothing and a shoe store which was a major change to the mall. The mall grew and more stores opened and grew along with the mall. In the 80's, more changes were made to the mall.
Brookdale Center's department stores in 1984. They were:
* Dayton's
* Carson Pirie Scott
* JCPenney's
* Sears
Donaldson's which was build about 15 years ago from 1984, was bought out by Carson Pirie Scott. Later Carson Pirie Scott was bought out by a California company and Dayton's was bought out by a Chicago-based company.
Brookdale Center's department stores in 2002, They were:
* JCPenney's
* Marshall Field's
* Mervyn's
* Sears
Carson Pirie Scott is now Mervyn's and Dayton's, a local department store. Was bought out by Chicago-based Marshall Field's. Brookdale Center later brought up plans for a renovation project and so did Grove Square. A mall in the neighboring town of Maple Grove. Grove Square brought up plans to tare down the K-Mart, and build a JCPenney's. Brookdale Center would then have to move its JCPenney's location and move to Maple Grove. A town that wasn't as run down as Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park. The K-Mart was toren down and in it's place was a brand-new JCPenney's. Brookdale Center than brought up plans for a store in the Marshall Field's parking lot. The plan was approved by the city of Brooklyn Center and was built for a Kohl's. Marshall Field's was later bought out by a national department store chain. Mervyn's filed for bankruptcy and is now vacant.
JCPenney's was replaced by a smaller-based store.
Brookdale Center's department stores in 2007, They were:
* Kohl's
* Macy's
* Sears
* Steve and Barry's
Sears in now the only original department store left. Macy's later became the most popular store in the mall. Brookdale later came up for another plan to tear down the north part of the mall to make way for a new food court, another department store, and more retail space. The plan was approved and started. Instead of another department store, the space was split in two to make way for a Barnes and Noble and an AJ Lomax Famous Labels. In 2008, Steve and Barry's closed its doors before announcing that they had filed for Chapter 11 in 2009. Then to make times even more worse, Barnes and Noble announced closing because the store did not feel comfortable to be in a 50% vacant mall. Then, Macy's announced that they would close there doors for the same reasons.
Brookdale Center's department stores in 2010, They were:
* Kohl's
* Sears
Brookdale Center later closed there doors in late 2009, due to to many vacancies. Though, Sears and Kohl's kept their doors open. The only things left open was Kohl's, Sears, and an Applebee's. Brookdale had just finished a brand new food court, and a remodeled half of the mall to invite more customers which just didn't work out. In 2010, a Tennessee firm brought up plans for Brookdale Center. Tear down half of the mall, build a Wal-Mart Supercenter in its place, and add more retail space. An answer has not yet been approved and is still negotiating about this plan.
* JCPenney's
* Sears
* Woolworth's
